Design a stair and check it against the rules

The Stairs module builds a complete timber stair — treads, risers, stringers, newels, handrail and balusters — and checks it live against your market's building rules, so you see at once which number to change.

  1. Here is a quarter-turn stair with a landing, made with the Stair tool of the Stairs group: 2600 mm floor to floor, 900 mm wide, for a private house in the UK. Click any part of it: Entity Info shows the stair's numbers and, under Rules (GB), every rule checked against it.

  2. Two rules fail: a 200 mm going is too short, and the stair is steeper than 42°. Type 250 in Going and press Enter. The stair is made again with deeper treads, and every rule passes.

  3. Open Stairs on the top bar for the stair's numbers and the full table of rules with their sources. Draw plan and stringers adds a plan sheet and a sheet for each stringer to the model's drawings.

Good to know

  • The Stair tool's Type list makes straight stairs, quarter or half turns with a landing, and quarter or half turns with balanced winders.
  • Rules come with the model's market: the UK (Approved Document K), the US (IRC / IBC), France and Germany, with Blondel's comfort rule as advice everywhere.
  • A stair is a timber assembly: its treads, stringers and newels are in the timber lists, and its housings go out in BTLx.
